GABORONE Authentic Kyle Rudolph Jersey , Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Botswana's Minister of Education and Skills Development Mokgweetsi Masisi on Wednesday was sworn in as the Vice President.
Masisi was nominated by President Seretse Khama Ian Khama as of Vice President and later endorsed by the members of National Assembly through a secret ballot with 38 votes. 19 MP's abstained from the election while 1 vote was spoiled.
Office of the President of Botswana later issued a statement that Masisi will retain his ministerial portfolio.
Earlier before the endorsement of the vice president, former cabinet minister Gladys Kokorwe and Gaborone South MP Kagiso Molatlhegi were elected as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.
Mokgweetsi Masisi who is a member of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) won parliament seat of Moshupa constituency in this year's general elections and was then appointed as the minister of Education and Skills Development.
According to the constitution, the country's next general elections will be held in 2019, five years after the last elections Authentic Linval Joseph Jersey , however, as President Khama took office in 2008 following the former president Festus Mogae's retirement, the vice president will take over as the president in about four years time when Khama's 10-year expire in 2018.
Batswana cast their ballots on Oct. 24 to choose the 57 members of the National Assembly and 490 councillors for local governments. Khama was reelected as the president of Botswana after BDP won majority of the parliament seats.
Fifty-seven elected MPs in the general elections and four specially elected members were sworn in on Oct. 30 following the president inauguration on Oct. 28.
According to the law, after then the election of the speaker and the deputy shall be held via a secret ballot among parliamentarians. This will be followed by endorsement of the vice president after the president submitted a name.
However Authentic Harrison Smith Jersey , as Botswana's attorney general Athaliah Molokomme had earlier wanted the court to declare election on the speaker and deputy speaker and endorsement of the Vice President via secret ballot are unconstitutional, the elections and the endorsement had been delayed.
The case was resolved on Monday as the court of appeal dismissed the case and ruled the secret ballots do not infringe on the constitution.
