It has been a rough two games for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. After posting a career-low 5.5 Total QBR and suffering a torn meniscus in a loss to the Miami Dolphins, he returned less than three weeks after surgery to post the seventh-worst Total QBR of his career (16.6) in a key AFC North loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. This is the worst two-game stretch Roethlisberger has compiled since 2006, the first season we have QBR data for. This stretch has dropped him in the QBR rankings as well. Even after his bad game against Miami, Roethlisberger ranked sixth in the league (74.0 Total QBR), but after another subpar effort in Week 9 (as well as others performing better while he was away), Roethlisberger has dropped to 12th in the league with a 65.4 Total QBR.So what has gone wrong for Big Ben in his past two games? For starters, his third-down production has fallen off a cliff.During the first five games of the season Roethlisberger was one of the best quarterbacks in the league on third down, converting 52 percent of his pass attempts into first downs while averaging more than 10.5 yards per attempt with six touchdowns and no picks. He also took only two third-down sacks. This was good for a 92.7 raw QBR, second-best in the league through five weeks. But in his past two games hes only converted 22 percent of his pass attempts into first downs, is averaging 4.7 yards per attempt, hasnt thrown a touchdown and has been sacked three times for a 0.3 raw QBR -- last in the league during that time.Part of the issue is the Steelers inability to gain yardage on first- and second-downs (where Roethlisberger has also seen sharp drops in his QBR, from 75.4 in Weeks 1 through 5 to 19.7 in Weeks 6 and 9), setting up more difficult third downs. During his first five games, Pittsburghs average third-down distance was 6.5 yards, third-shortest in the league, but in Weeks 6 through 9 (noting that Roethlisberger didnt play in Week 7) the Steelers average third-down distance jumped to 8 yards, fourth-longest in the league.Hes also having trouble dealing with the pass rush, with injuries logically playing a key role there. One of Roethlisbergers key traits is being able to deal with pressure and extend plays, but his mobility has been limited. Going into Week 6, Roethlisbergers raw QBR while pressured was 32.6, which doesnt sound great, but was right around league average for that point in the season. Also, Roethlisberger has been historically better than most, ranking in the top 10 in QBR while pressured every season since 2011. And over his past two games (while granting it is a very small sample size) his raw QBR while pressured is a 0.3.The good news for Steelers fans is if Big Ben can get healthy there is every reason to think he can climb back up the leaderboard. Following his last slump in 2015, he rebounded to post a Total QBR of 80-plus in five of his next seven games.A look at Roethlisbergers QBR trends thus far in 2016: Andre Drummond Jersey .
