FORT WORTH, Texas -- Joe Gibbs tries to not get in the middle of things when his drivers leave a racetrack frustrated with one another, as happened this past weekend at Martinsville. He wants his drivers to mend any fences among themselves. The drivers meet weekly at the shop and again throughout the race weekend. Gibbs and other team executives can be in some of the meetings, but not at all of them.I always leave that to them to go over that and straighten that out, Gibbs said about his drivers being angry with each other. All of them are super competitive. Theyre doing everything they can to try to win. Thats why all of our people at our race team think weve got great guys driving for us.After a weekend when?Kyle Busch said the drivers didnt work well together at the end and in some ways gave Jimmie Johnson the victory, the drivers showed a united front Friday at Texas Motor Speedway.Maybe I was expecting a little bit different ... than what transpired in the race on Sunday, but we talked, Busch said Friday afternoon. Forgive and forget. Move on. And here we are.All four of the JGR drivers -- Busch, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards -- remain in the Chase, and they know that all four of them cant advance to be eligible for the championship in two weeks at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Johnson clinched one of those four spots with his win at Martinsville.Hamlin, Kenseth and Busch have spots 2-3-4 in the standings thanks to their 3-4-5 finish at Martinsville, with Edwards a distant eighth after he had a tire issue that resulted in a crash. Its just cause we all had a top?three car during the end of the race and we ended up 3-4-5 [across the finish line], Denny Hamlin said. Thats never happy [times].Busch opened the Texas weekend promptly getting loose thanks to the Texas surface bumps and slapping the wall on his first lap of practice. He will have to use a backup car the rest of the weekend.Speeds are really high here at Texas, Busch said. When you lose that grip, typically it happens in a hurry and it just kind of got away from me there. I wish I would have had maybe taken it a little bit more easy, but I really wasnt even trying that hard.?The driver with possibly the best chance at Texas is Edwards, who led 124 of 334 laps in Texas in April before a loose wheel ended up ruining his race-winning hopes. If Edwards doesnt win this week, then he heads to Phoenix, where he battled Kevin Harvick side-by-side on the losing end at the finish line in March.Texas is the first one we circled, Edwards crew chief Dave Rogers said about the Chase races. Phoenix, obviously that door-to-door finish was really exciting for our fans, but we had an extremely strong car at Texas.Edwards has another fast car this weekend. And he doesnt necessarily have to worry about having teammates help him as he doesnt need a spot or two during the course of the next two weeks. He needs a win.Youre going to have times where people are frustrated, Edwards said. Thats part of it. But what we have, though, as a group is something that I think is really special.I can tell you that my three teammates have made me a better race car driver the last two years, and Im grateful for that. When we have issues, we get right to it and we resolve it.Edwards said he got to watch the issues from Martinsville get resolved. Or at least listened to the discussions. The only good thing about having the tire problem is I didnt get caught up in any of that, Edwards said. I didnt see firsthand what happened. ... I know in the discussions afterward everybody had a different perspective but everyone understood one another and got over that very quickly. While he can say that, it will only be proved in how the Gibbs drivers work together Sunday at Texas. Other than Edwards, they are neck-and-neck with each other and could end up battling for positions that determine a spot in the Chase.Every week we talk about what we can do to help each other, and make things better, Kenseth said. But we also realize, when they drop the green on Sunday, its one-against-39 and we have to get the best finish we can. With the elimination-format Chase in its third year, teams and drivers are learning how to manage the Chase. Last year, Busch won the title by doing enough to advance out of each round and not freaking out about whether he was leading laps or winning. He won the season finale and captured the championship. So he will try not to freak out over a few ruffled feathers among teammates.Theres going to be instances where youre mad at other drivers, youre mad at your teammates, Busch said. You express those frustrations. I guess for me, it would have been best probably to talk to my teammates first and kind of figure out what the whole concept was there and the whole idea of what happened, happened.Looking back on it now, weve just got to focus forward and we all try to continue to work together the best we can. Thats what Toronto Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos has to decide ahead of MLBs non-waiver trade deadline on Wednesday. At 48-56 and sitting in the basement of the AL East, nine games out of a playoff spot, the Blue Jays appear to be in prime selling mode. But this is a team that entered the year with great expectations, and has a lot of talent throughout the roster. If Anthopoulos is holding out hope for a second half run, he may look to add a piece to kick the team into gear. If thats the route, pitching would likely be the GMs focus. The team has the second worst ERA in the big leagues at 4.35 and has been battling injuries all season (12 different pitchers have started at least one game for the Jays this year.) The asking price for arms is reportedly extremely high, but names like Jake Peavy, Ervin Santana, and Bud Norris are out there to be had. The more realistic route for the Jays is to either stay put or sell.dddddddddddd If Anthopoulos thinks the team can regain their contender status for next year with a few off-season moves, he may decide to sit on his hands Wednesday and not make any real decisions until the winter. But if he wants to start the roster tinkering early, he has some names that could net decent gains, particularly in the bullpen with some sell-high candidates. Closer Casey Janssen, Brett Cecil, and Steve Delabar have enjoyed good seasons which could result in a good return. There are some position players that could intrigue other GMs as well, especially if Anthopoulos wants to make bold changes to the roster and put guys like Jose Bautista on the block for the right price. As the non-waiver trade deadline approaches we ask: Should the Toronto Blue Jays be buyers or sellers? Youve heard what weve had to say, now its your turn. As always, its Your! Call. ' ' '
