RIO DE JANEIRO -- Leah Smith trains with 19-year-old American swimming sensation Katie Ledecky at the Nations Capital Swim Club in Bethesda, Maryland, so she knows what to expect when she and Ledecky go racing. But it has to help, too, that Smith has a grounded sense of humor about the freakishly large margins of victory that Ledecky keeps posting -- as Ledecky did again in their 400-meter freestyle final Sunday night at the Rio Summer Olympics. When Ledecky was still a blistering 1.19 seconds under her own world record at the halfway point of the race, Smith said she wasnt tempted to steal a look because the roar of crowd seemed to grow louder with every lap. And Smith knew it could only mean one thing. When she does that, part of you is in awe and part of you is trying like crazy to catch up to her, Smith said of Ledecky with a laugh. I knew she was going to win. ... But when I saw her take off with 150 meters to go, I knew she was onto something special. Its kind of fun because you hear the crowd going insane and you try to pretend its for you, even though you know its for Katie.Ledecky shattered her previous world mark in the 400 free by 1.91 seconds, finishing Sundays final in 3:56.46 -- a time threshold that meant a lot for her because she had been chasing it (not just her previous world record of 3:58.37) for a couple of years now. Bruce Gemmel, the coach who has helped build her astonishing range at distances from the 100 to 1,500 meters, hung 3:56 out there for her a while ago, and it was one of the few things Ledecky hasnt done.British silver medalist Jazz Carlin finished 4.77 seconds behind Ledecky in 4:01.23, and Smith took the bronze in 4:01.92.All told, the U.S. grabbed five medals Sunday on a terrific night of swimming in which four world records were broken at the Olympics Aquatics Centre.Cody Miller took a bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke that Britains Andy Peaty won in world-record time, American Dana Vollmers comeback was rewarded with a bronze in the 100 butterfly in which Swedens Sarah Sjostrom broke the world record, and the American mens?4x100-meter relay pulled off an emotional win against France and Australia in world-record time, giving Michael Phelps his 19th career gold medal. It was a great night for Team USA, Ledecky said. Were rolling and excited for the rest of the week.Ledecky is among the believers that success can be contagious for a swim team when it gets to a big event like this. She was only 15 when she won a gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle at the London Games four years ago, and she spent most of her time cheering for the rest of the team because her final wasnt until the seventh day of the eight-day meet. Here in Rio, Ledecky said, the U.S. swimmers tried to get the team spirit going early by deciding to ring a cowbell every time one of its swimmers leaves their gathering spot in the warm-up pool to go to the starting blocks to race. Ledecky admits the bell is an acquired taste. When is Katie Ledeckys next race? Check out the complete scheduleI think its annoying some other teams, she said, breaking into a grin, but we have a really great team atmosphere. No wonder. Phelps meet is off to a strong start. With her win, Ledecky remains a legitimate contender to win six medals in all six of her events in Rio. Shes living up to her renown as arguably the most dominant athlete in the world. On Saturday, she won a silver anchoring the 4x100 freestyle relay, an unexpected honor that admittedly left her shaking as she waited to dive in for the final leg. She still has the 200 free and 800 free to go, plus two relays. (Shes also the current world-record holder in the 800 and 1,500, which isnt contested at the Olympics)So far, so good.Im looking forward to the challenge, Ledecky said. Discount Womens Nike Shox . The doctors said no.Schwarber will be relegated to pinch-hitting duty for the next three games in the World Series after doctors said Thursday it was too soon after his major left knee surgery to risk putting him in the outfield against the Cleveland Indians. Were going to respect the doctors, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. Theyre the professionals here and move forward. Kyle understands that. He wants to play, hes the ultimate gamer, but he understands that the doctors judgment has to rule the day in this case.Schwarber was ruled out for the year after he tore two knee ligaments in an outfield collision with Dexter Fowler in Chicagos third game of the season. But he had an encouraging checkup with Dr. Daniel Cooper on Oct. 17 in Dallas, clearing the way for a rushed return by way of the Arizona Fall League.Schwarber served as the designated hitter for the first two games in Cleveland, going 3 for 7 with a pair of RBI singles in Chicagos series-tying victory in Game 2 on Wednesday night. The Cubs were so excited by his success that they had what Epstein called lengthy phone conversations with Cooper and Dr. Stephen Gryzlo, one of the Cubs physicians. But Cooper and Gryzlo said they couldnt clear him for the field at this point.Theres just too much risk in playing the outfield because of the dynamic actions involved, the instantaneous reactions, thhe need to cut in the outfield, the dynamic, athletic movements that are unanticipated in the outfield, your instinct in reacting to balls that just arent the case when youre running the bases, Epstein said.ddddddddddddchwarber was selected by Chicago with the fourth overall pick in the 2014 amateur draft out of Indiana University. He made his major league debut last June, part of a wave of bright young talent that helped the once-downtrodden franchise blossom into one of baseballs top clubs. The Middletown, Ohio, native hit .246 with 16 homers and 43 RBI in 69 games last year, but really rose to prominence in the postseason. He hit .333 with a franchise-record five homers in nine playoff games, including a drive that reached the top of a Wrigley Field videoboard.Schwarber stood in left for a short while during batting practice on Thursday, but he never took any fly balls. He had already talked to the doctors at that point.Deep down in my heart I really wanted to, but theres obviously the doubts of the injury, he said. You know, it was a huge injury, and thats the facts. Not many people get this opportunity that Im in right now, so Im embracing this opportunity that Ive got and Im going to cheer my teammates on, and when my time comes, Im going to be ready for that opportunity.---Jay Cohen can be reached at http://www.twitter.com/jcohenap ' ' '
