ASHBURN, Va. -- Forcing three second-half turnovers helped the Washington Redskins get back to .500 after a 0-2 start and masked a whole host of problems plaguing the defense this season.Injuries to several starters, tackling woes and third-down inefficiency are among the top issues going into this weeks game at the Baltimore Ravens. The Redskins may get back linebacker Ryan Kerrigan and cornerback Bashaud Breeland, but whoevers on the field will have to wrap up opponents better than against Cleveland.Coach Jay Gruden counted 11 missed tackles in Sundays 31-20 victory over the Browns, more than a few of which came in crucial situations as Washington fell to last in the NFL in third-down defense. The Redskins are allowing conversions on third down 57 percent of the time, and Gruden wants that mark at 35, especially important with a veteran quarterback up next in the Ravens Joe Flacco. Were not even close right now, Gruden said. Its an issue. We have to get better on third down. These teams that we play are very good coming up. Baltimore is an excellent team, Flacco, and were going to have to get better on third down.So far the Redskins have tried a little bit of everything with man-to-man and zone coverages and havent managed to solve the problem. The lack of a consistent pass rush hasnt helped. Were just going to continue to mix it up and do some things and hopefully get more pressure on the quarterback and cover better, Gruden said. Thats all we can do.Tackling in the open field would be a positive step, too. Browns running back Isaiah Crowell picked up many of his 115 yards after contact, and Redskins players took responsibility. Defensive end Ricky Jean Francois said the Redskins showed a lack of fundamentals -- and thats on the players, not the coaches. This week will include film study and talk about tackling. Gruden isnt sure if players are ducking their heads too much but is confident players will make the necessary adjustments.Itll be an automatic improvement if the Redskins get back Kerrigan, who left the Browns game with a hyperextended left elbow, and Breeland, who sat out with a left ankle injury. Gruden said theyre day to day and that safety David Bruton and linebacker Sua Cravens are in concussion protocol after getting knocked out of the game.Safety DeAngelo Hall (torn ACL) and nose tackle Kedric Golston (strained hamstring) are already out for the season, but the other injuries left the Redskins in no mans land, unsure of who will be able to play. These injuries are tough because they could be OK, Gruden said. Youd hate to bring in a bunch of new people and have to make roster changes when these guys might be OK to play. Thats the biggest problem with them right now. I think in-house were OK right now without having to bring anybody else in unless we get worse news on some of these injuries. Some stability would help on that front, especially in red-zone situations and in run stopping, where the Redskins have struggled. For all their problems, the Redskins are 2-2 after games against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Browns. And they have an awareness that things are far from rosy at the quarter mark of the season.Weve got to play better, linebacker Will Compton said. Fortunately were 2-2. Our ceiling is way higher than what weve had in seasons past.Game notes Gruden expects guard Shawn Lauvao to practice mid-week after missing the Cleveland game with an ankle injury. ... I get that. We wouldnt trade it. We like where we are, coach Mike Riley said Monday. But we also have to stay hungry. The Huskers are starting a stretch of three road games in four weeks. They return home to play Purdue next week and then have back-to-back trips to No. 8 Wisconsin and No. 2 Ohio State.Definitely, this second half for us, having to play road games at Wisconsin, Ohio State and then turn around and go to Iowa. Those are three tough tests on the road, and going to Indiana as well. Those guys are ready for us, Armstrong said. We have to make sure if we want to get where we want to go, we have to win these tough games. The Hoosiers, who went to a bowl last year for the first time since 2007, continue to put up big offensive numbers with new quarterback Richard Lagow. Armstrong Jr., the fourth-year starter, and running back Terrell Newby have played the best football of their careers and cornerback Chris Jones has been the top player in a secondary that has intercepted nine passes and greatly cut down on the number of big pass plays allowed. On the injury front, Armstrong (ankle) is out of his walking boot and practiced Sunday, as did receiver Alonzo Moore (shoulder). Riley said running back Devine Ozigbo (ankle), receiver Jordan Westerkamp (back) and tight end Cethan Carter (elbow) are doubtful for the Indiana game.Armstrong said he sprained an ankle when brought down by a horse-collar tackle in the second half against Illinois. He said if the Huskers had a game this past weekend, he probably wouldnt have played. He said he got extra rest and spent a lot of time getting treatment on his ankle last week.Im feeling good now and ready to go, Armstrong said. I practiced yesterday and got a chance to get out there with those guys and get to work. This past week I was taking mental notes as I helped out each player who got in there.---Online:AP college football website: http://collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
